Prepositional verbs. - Verbos con preposiciones.

Prepositional verbs (verbos con preposiciones) son verbos que llevan una preposición y un objeto.

• John is looking after the children.

• Every day, they talk about football.

• She is waiting for her boyfriend.

After, about y for son preposiciones.

El objeto debe colocarse siempre después de la preposición:

• John looks after the children on Saturdays.

y no

• John looks the children after.

Ojo: No hay diferencia si el objeto es un sustantivo o un pronombre

• John looks after them on Saturdays.

Con prepositional verbs, las preposiciones cambian el significado de la frase:

• Peter looks after the children.  
• Peter looks for the children.

Lo más importante es tener en cuenta que los prepositional verbs  tienen significados distintos de los verbos que los forman.

No se puede separar los prepositional verbs. Así que no se permite colocar el direct object entre el verbo y la preposición.

apply for - solicitar

• I will apply for a visa to Australia this week. - Solicitaré la visa para Australia esta semana.

believe in -

• Even though she's ten, she still believes in fairies. - A pesar de tener diez años,  todavía cree en hadas.

belong to - pertenecer a

• This book belongs to John. - Este libro pertenece a John.

care about (think someone or something is important) - preocuparse por

• I care about the issue of global warming. - Me preocupo por lo relacionado con el calentamiento global.

care for - cuidar a

• We cared for daddy when he was ill. - Cuidamos a papi cuando estuvo enfermo.

concentrate on = focus on - concentrarse en, enfocarse en

• You should concentrate on passing the test. - Deberías concentrarte en pasar la prueba.

depend on - depender de

• If we got to the beach depends on the weather. - Si vamos a la playa depende del tiempo.

dream about (imagine) - soñar, fatasear.

• He dreams about becoming an astronaut. - Sueña con convertirse en astronauta algún día.

dream of (consider) - ocurrir, ni en los sueños.

• She wouldn’t dream of changing her job. - No se le ocurriría cambiar su trabajo.

hear about - enterarse de

• Did you hear about the earthquake in Japan? - ¿Te enteraste de lo del terremoto en Japón?

Pero: hear from (receive news from) - tener noticias de, saber de.

• She hasn't heard from her brother in 3 months. - Hace tres meses que no sabe nada de su hermano,

look at - mirar.

• Look at the photo. - Mira la foto.

suffer from (illness) - padecer, sufrir de.

• My grandfather suffers from arthritis and can hardly walk. - Mi abuelo sufre de artritis y apenas si puede andar.

think about - pensar en

• What are you thinking about? - ¿En qué estás pensando?

Pero: think of / about (consider) - considerar.

• Before taking a decision we need to think about all the pros and cons. - Antes de tomar una decisión, debemos considerar todos los pros y contras.

También: think of / about (to have an opinion) - tener una opinión sobre algo, opinar.

• What do you think of / about the new President? - ¿Qué opinas del nuevo Presidente de México.
  
  

wait for - esperar, esperar a.

• The children are waiting for the bus. - Los niños están esperando el autobús.

• She is waiting for her mother. - Ella está esperando a su madre.
