School girl’s food blog banned by council

Today we go to Scotland to talk about the blog of a nine year old girl. The blogger’s name is Martha Payne who lives in a small town in western scotland. Her blog is called NeverSeconds and in it she writes about the dinners she eats at school. Every day she chooses a dish from the menu and takes a photo of it. She is interested in how it tastes and how healthy it is. Most of the time the food was ok and a few times, really good. But sometimes it was poor.

A local newspaper read the blog and wrote an article with the headlines, “Time to fire the dinner ladies.” This alarmed the workers in the school kitchen and also the local council. The result - she was banned from taking any more photos of the food at school. At home Martha wrote, what she thought, was her last blog post, saying goodbye to her readers.

No one could have predicted what happened next. The next day Martha’s story went viral. People commented about it on facebook, tweeted about it on twitter and wrote blog posts about it on their blogs. This attracted the attention of newspapers, radio and television. A lot of people said that the action of the council was daft, stupid or mindless and that they were censoring any comments about food in schools. Many people also used two common English expressions when writing about the story. They said that the council, “bit off more than it could chew.” or that its “plans had completely backfired on it.”

Anyway, within 24 hours the council made a U-turn and unbanned Martha from taking photos. Roddie McGuish from the council said, “It’s a good thing to change your mind..., and I’ve certainly done that.”

Now the blog is more popular than ever and children from countries around the world send in their photos. Martha also uses her blog to raise money for a charity called Mary’s dinners, which provides school meals for poor children in Malawi.  

Since she started her blog she has raised enough money to build a kitchen and feed over 2,000 children for an entire year and the donations keep coming in.

Vocabulario:

Hoy vamos a Escocia para hablar de un blog de una niña de nueve años. El nombre del blogger es Martha Payne, que vive en un pequeño pueblo en el oeste de Escocia. Su blog se llama “NeverSeconds” y en él escribe sobre las comidas que come en su colegio. Todos los días  elige un plato del menú y toma una foto de ello. Ella está interesada por el sabor y si está  saludable. La mayoría de las veces la comida estaba bien y algunas veces, muy buena. Pero a veces era mala.

Un periódico local leyó el blog y escribió un artículo con el titular, "Es hora de despedir a las mujeres de la cocina." Esto alarmó a los trabajadores de la cocina y también el ayuntamiento local. El resultado - le prohibieron tomar fotos de la comida en el comedor. Luego en casa Marta escribió, lo que pensaba era su última entrada, diciendo adiós a sus lectores.

Nadie podría haber predicho lo que sucedió después. Al día siguiente, la historia de Marta se volvió viral. La gente dejó comentarios en Facebook y en Twitter y escribió entradas al respecto en sus blogs. Esto llamó la atención de los periódicos, la radio y la televisión. Mucha gente dice que la acción del ayuntamiento era tonto, estúpido o sin sentido y que estaba censurando cualquier comentario sobre la comida en los colegios. Mucha gente también utilizó dos expresiones inglesas comunes al escribir sobre la tema. Dijeron que el ayuntamiento, " bit off more than it could chew." o que sus "plans had completely backfired on it."

De todos modos, dentro de 24 horas, el ayuntamiento dio un giro de 180º  y quitó la prohibición de tomar fotos. McGuish Roddie del consejo, dijo, "Es buena cambiar de opinión ..., y por cierto lo he hecho.”

Ahora, el blog es más popular que nunca y niños de diferentes países de todo el mundo envían sus fotos. Martha también utiliza su blog para recaudar fondos para una organización benéfica llamada “Mary’s dinners”, que proporciona comidas escolares a  los niños más pobres de Malawi.

Desde que comenzó su blog ha recaudado dinero suficiente para construir una cocina y alimentar más de 2.000 niños durante un año entero y todavía las donaciones siguen llegando.
